A Sea Point pilgrimage

It's wonderful to be back.

A Sea Point pilgrimage
The 50m public swimming pool at Sea Point Pavilion. I swam 1.2km here mid-morning. Sublime.

One of the first places in Cape Town I made a point of visiting since getting here 1.5~ weeks ago was the coastal neighbourhood of Sea Point. In fact, I've been twice. Both times: the frisson of delighted familiarity sparking against awe. This is a stretch of Cape Town I've known since I was a child. Returning now, after a long time away, I'm not seeing it as a foreigner visiting for the time might. Still, my senses seem heightened, my appreciation amplified. I drink in the views, listen to the ocean's crash and splatter, inhale the cool salty breeze, dive into the pool – and my whole body goes, "Wow, wow, wow!"

The Sea Point Promenade. Surely one of the best strolling spots in the world?
In Rome (where they are native) the umbrella pines reminded me of Cape Town. Now that I am back amidst Cape Town's lovely specimens they remind me of Rome. I'm crushing hard on them, delighted by their strange, elongated, wind-curved silhouettes; they're possibly my favourite alien tree in the Cape.
